Who owns the Alcola church?
ALCOLA - Digging for hidden artifacts in the village of Fishbasket Indiantown - now known as Alcola - has sparked the interest of local historians for decades.
But, recently, the search has taken a different turn - residents are not looking for bits of Native American culture, they are seeking proof of ownership of one of the oldest structures in the village.
A red brick church has been prominently situated along Route 28 in the middle of the village for nearly 100 years.
The congregation dispersed into other area churches about 15 years ago and another church organization had been using the building as its meeting place. However, as its own membership gradually diminished, it, too, ceased to hold regular services.
