County to build new emergency center
KITTANNING - A new Emergency Operations Center will be built in Armstrong County within the next three years, aided in large part by a $1 million federal grant announced last week.
Armstrong County Commissioners Patty Kirkpatrick and Jim Scahill said Thursday that the county will receive the grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Randy Brozenick, Armstrong County Public Safety director, said that the funding was highly competitive and that while hundreds of applications are received for projects across the nation, only a handful receive grants. In 2009, more than 600 applications were submitted and 22 grants awarded.
"The team put together a really good application," he said of the cooperation between county departments that worked on the grant.

Mahoning Elem. to be topic of public meeting
NEW BETHLEHEM - Just as its lengthy meeting was coming to a close last night (Tuesday), Redbank Valley School Board members fell into a lively debate over how to proceed with the looming decision concerning the potential closing of Mahoning Elementary School.
After talks settled, a public meeting to review details of the proposal was set for Monday, Sept. 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the high school.
The discussion is new for some and decades-old for others but a few board members are seeking new and additional information before they feel they would be ready to make a fair vote on the subject.

Union mourns teacher, coach
RIMERSBURG - Teams of counselors and clergy were on hand yesterday (Tuesday) to help Union High School students and staff cope with the sudden death of teacher and coach Al Pryor on Saturday.
Pryor, 54, a 1974 Union High School graduate who returned to teach science and geography and coach football and track, died at his Meyers Hollow Road, Parker, home Saturday. The Office of the Clarion County Coroner ruled the death a suicide.
A teacher at Union since 1995, Pryor was also the school's head varsity football coach and girls track coach.

Congregation to construct church
PORTER TWP. - About 18 months ago, the long-talked-about dream of building a new church, started to feel more like reality for one local church congregation.
Members of Cottage Hill Allegheny Wesleyan Church had collected enough funds toward the project after years of saving that they felt it was time to form a building committee.
Earlier this week, with the movement of power lines on their new property, the congregation began to see tangible signs of their vision, if only from a distance.

Art in the Park returns Sunday with new events
NEW BETHLEHEM - Changes are coming to the New Bethlehem Area Free Public Library's Art in the Park festival this Sunday in order to bring more art to the area.
Not only will there be a new youth art exhibit and various art demonstrations throughout the day in Gumtown Park, but Art in the Park is looking for animal artists.
"Feel free to bring your pets along - dogs, cats...hamsters," library director Erin Joyce said last week while working on the final details for the annual one-day festival.

Local contractors in the running for RVMA work
NEW BETHLEHEM - As the organization winds up work on the recently-built water treatment plant, Redbank Valley Municipal Authority (RVMA) is already starting to move forward on three new projects.
At a special meeting on Sept. 2, RVMA members reviewed a number of bids for a sewage interceptor and for sewer line extensions into Cottage Hill and along the Route 66 corridor outside of New Bethlehem.
The sealed bids were opened on Aug. 31.

Thompson, Oberlander give legislative update
CLARION - Taking time out of their busy schedules to give a legislative update, U.S. Congressman Glenn Thompson (R-Howard) and state Rep. Donna Oberlander (R-Clarion) were on hand Thursday morning at the Clarion Holiday Inn to bring the crowd up to speed on the happenings in Washington and Harrisburg during the 26th Eggs and Answers held by the Clarion County Economic Development Corporation.
"Congress is not in session right now," Thompson said, joking that may be the reason people have been feeling pretty good lately.
Thompson started off the discussion by stating that Clarion County is a wonderful county, and also has a a wonderful community.
