Spectators a concern at ethanol plant site

New projects are always interesting to see, but spectators are causing problems for the Bionol Clearfield plant.
At Thursday's Clearfield Borough Council meeting, code enforcement Officer Jim Kling said within the next few weeks, construction on the Bionol plant is expected to "really start taking off." The plant is being built in the Clearfield Technology Park just off Route 322/Bigler Avenue. The plant will consist of a large corn-based ethanol plant and a smaller, cellulose-based pilot plant. Construction began earlier this spring.
Bionol is requesting permission to place signs near the entrance to the Technology Park, located near Eight Street, to deter spectators who are causing safety issues.
Kling said since construction began, people have been driving their vehicles, riding bicycles and walking pets through the work zone to see how things are progressing. Sometimes the spectators become disoriented and get lost in the work zone. With the increasing amount of construction equipment and machinery coming in and out of the area, the risk of accidents and injuries will increase.
"They want to be good tenants, but the safety issues are starting to become a concern," Kling said. He said there will be a guard house and fencing but signs limiting traffic will also go a long way toward helping the problem.
Kling also said construction is expected to begin soon for the new Rite Aid store in the borough.
