St. Marys schools get subsidy increase

ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Area School District will receive a 3.9 percent basic subsidy based on the final budget passed by the Pennsylvania legislature, Superintendent Murray Neeper said during a special school board meeting Tuesday.
This isn't bad news, although it is lower than some of the numbers that had been discussed during the budget process, Neeper said.
The costing out study was done to determine how much it costs for schools to educate students. Some of the area schools were looking to receive just a 1.5 percent increase, but that has now been raised to at least 3 percent, Neeper said.
The costing out study had also recommended projecting how much schools will receive for several years, but this is only a one year budget, Neeper said.
Mark Romain of Aramark updated the board on the district's maintenance projects.
The proposed paving plan for the high school and middle school parking lots is to do the high traffic areas, such as the middle section of the high school lot and the exit drive and service areas for the middle school.
The gym floor at the high school is almost done. Graphics are being painted on the floor at this time.
The St. Marys Area School Board also approved several paving and floor contracts during Tuesday's meeting.
The board approved a paving contract for South St. Marys Street Elementary School for $55,600 with Weatherproofing Technologies, inc. Board members Jim Baumgratz and Jim Healy were not present.
A contract for paving and concrete work at the high school and middle school was approved with Weatherproofing Technologies, Inc. for $1,426,380.
The board approved a contract with Volz Environmental Services for a floor replacement project at Bennetts Valley Elementary School.
The cost for Phase I is $2,000 and $700 after the pre-bid meeting.
KTH will put the duct work and lighting out for bid for next year.
It would cost the district 20 percent more to do it while school is in session since classrooms would have to be taken apart to do the work then put back together each night.
The delay will also give the contractor ample time to get the price for materials and limit the disruption for students, Chairman Joe Goetz said.
Neeper said he is delighted to see the Adequate Yearly Progress results.
The school district met the requirements even though the percentage of students that needed to reach it had jumped from last year.
It was an achievement for students and faculty, he said.
In other board news:
* The middle school's environmental outdoor classroom initiative was recognized by the Pennsylvania Association of Small and Rural Schools.

* The high school orientation for new and transfer students will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5 and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 6.
