Emporium making plans for Christmas

Emporium's Christmas parade next month will look a little bit like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
A giant helium-filled reindeer will maneuver down Fourth Street on Dec. 12 as part of the "Christmas in the Wilds" parade, Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Johns Lorson said.
The parade kicks off at noon and runs from the Cameron County Christian Center (former Fourth Street School) to the Cameron County High School on Woodland Avenue. Two dozen area residents will handle "Robert the Reindeer," a  43-feet long and 18-feet tall balloon.
"The chamber hopes this addition will line the street with people wanting to see a Macy-style balloon without the hassles of traveling to New York City," Lorson said. "We just keep trying to grow Christmas in the Wilds to draw people to the town. We are really looking forward to it, and we hope we have snow."
The parade will also include Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus atop an aerial ladder truck, the Cameron County High School marching band and band front and floats and emergency response vehicles.
Other activities besides the parade are scheduled for day.
A breakfast with Santa will be held at the Emporium Fire Hall on Broad Street beginning at 9 a.m. Santa and two of his reindeer, Dasher and Dancer, will be available for photographs on Fourth Street in the vacant lot near the chamber office on Fourth Street.
Jakobs Ladder will perform at 1 p.m. at the chamber office, and artists will demonstrate their work inside that office, such as painting on turkey feathers and working with stained glass.
Children will be able to do crafts at downtown businesses from noon to 3 p.m., including making a graham-cracker house and a candycane reindeer stirring stick for hot chocolate. Throughout the day, foods, refreshments and other items will be available downtown.
Sylvan Heritage Council will also unveil an Emporium ornament.
The day before, the Antique Seekers will tour five homes beginning at 6 p.m. Dec. 11. Tickets are $10 and available by calling the chamber of commerce at (814) 486-4314 or at downtown businesses.
Those wishing to be a balloon handler should call (814) 486-4314 or the Mountain Laurel Federal Credit Union at (814) 486-0848.
More information about "Christmas in the Wilds" is available by calling (814) 486-4314.
